About the M109A6 155mm Howitzer ā Self Propelled Gun:
āSpeak softly, and carry a big stick,ā stated then Vice President Theodore Roosevelt in front of a crowd at the Minnesota State Fair. While the ideology behind the saying defined his leadership and foreign policy strategy, it has been carried forward to describe the power and the might of the United States Military. As warfare progressed through the Twentieth Century and into the Twenty-First, the weapons utilized have become bigger and more powerful. The ābig stickā analogy can be used to aptly describe the M109A6 Paladin self-propelled gun (SPG), the primary indirect-fire support gun behind American Armored brigades.
The Paladin is used to support Armored Brigade Combat Teams, Infantry Brigade Combat Teams, and Stryker Brigade Combat Teams. To do this, the Paladin utilizes its powerful 155mm M284 cannon. While the Paladin may look like a tank to the casual observer, due to its rotating turret, it operates a bit further behind the line in its effort to support ground forces. The Paladinās main armament operates via an automatic fire control system with ballistic computer and integration into the vehicleās inertial positioning and navigation systems. A crew of fourācommander, driver, gunner, and loaderāare all that are needed to operate the mobile artillery piece. The integration of automated loading reduces the needed number of crewmen. Once on target, the Paladin can sustain one round per three minutes but can fire in bursts of three rounds in fifteen seconds before needing to cool. To increase lethality, the Armyās Modular Artillery Charge Systems, or MACS, have been integrated into the fleet of Paladins. This includes the Raytheon/Bofors XM982 Excalibur GPS inertial navigation-guided extended-range 155mm projectiles. With these, the M109A6 can extend its range to 40km. Generally, the Paladin employs a āshoot-and-scootā strategy where a round is fired and then the vehicle relocates before reengaging. This strategy is designed to confuse the enemy and to protect the crew. A Browning M2HB .50 caliber machine gun sits on top of the turret to offer its crew protection from enemy combatants. All-in-all the M109A6 Paladin sits at the pinnacle of the Armyās fire-support strategy.
