The M38 4×4 truck was an upgrade of its famed World War II predecessor. The M38 was a combat version of the civilian CJ-3A with several upgrades to make it mission ready. These included stronger frame and suspension, and the ability to drive completely submerged. Additional upgrades included blackout lamps, headlight guards, and pintle mounts for pioneer tools. The M38 and its subsequent variants were outfitted to complete almost any task required of it. Also like its predecessor, the M38 served all over the world with various allies of the United States.

As Israel was founded as an independent state, the Israeli Defense Forces needed ready-made machines to defend its newly minted borders. The M38 served in similar capacities in Israel as it did in the United States as a utilitarian vehicle. During the Six Day War, Israeli M38 utility trucks served alongside infantry and armored units of the IDF. Specialized versions were equipped with M40 106mm recoilless rifles to aid in anti-armor and anti-material action. The IDF was largely outnumbered on the ground by the combined Arab armies, so the M38 with recoilless rifle offered added punch to the Israeli ground forces.
