Gaz AAA Truck

About the GAZ AAA – Medium Duty Military Truck:

Based on the Ford AA truck design, the Soviet Union’s Gaz AAA was the workhorse utility truck of the war. Found in many configurations, the base design hauled troops and supplies across the landscapes of Russia and Eastern Europe. By the 1920s, the Soviets looked to the United States—specifically Detroit—for inspiration in building a city with the sole intent to build automobiles. As the Soviets looked to find partnerships, the Ford Motor Company was the only interested party. With the help of Ford, the USSR built factories and cities to support a new industry. The signed contract added that Ford would assist and provide technical assistance to the Soviets and in return, the USSR agreed to purchase $13 million worth of automobiles and parts. With the help of Ford, the USSR built factories and cities to support a new industry. By 1932, the Gorkovsky Avtomobilny Zavod (GAZ) was in full production.

While the trucks were originally designed for the civilian industry, everything in the Soviet Union served a dual purpose. As tensions heightened and war broke out in Europe, those trucks transitioned into the Soviet military. Over 37,000 units of the Gaz AAA were built. Some with anti-aircraft guns mounted to the back while others used canvas covers to protect troops and supplies from the harsh elements. Like the American Deuce-and-a-half, the Gaz AAA became a symbol of the war effort.
